چکیده
Reliance on seasonal wild harvests of the edible long-horned grasshopper Ruspolia differens (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) needs to be broken through developing efficient mass rearing protocols. This study aimed at boosting productivity laboratory colonies R. understanding ways minimising cannibalism, selecting suitable oviposition substrates and enhancing egg development hatchability. Firstly, we investigated extent cannibalism in a colony relative total mortality, sex, diurnality, growth stage, body parts eaten visual barriers (presence/absence cardboard trays). cadavers recovered from cages with/without trays were scored for cause death (cannibalism/other), time (night/day), stage part devoured. Secondly, cotton wool leaf sheaths Pennisetum sp., maize Panicum sp. evaluated preference by differens. Eggs oviposited each substrate incubated determine developmental duration Thirdly, tested effect moistening eggs incubation period hatchability intact opened against unmoistened as control. We found that accounted 49% deaths with 83% victims being adults. Males females equally susceptible cannibalism. Over 97% occurred night presence almost doubled incidence The thorax was most preferred part, which consumed 77% cannibalised individuals. Maize over wool. Opening egg-laden reduced 0.4 days. Unmoistened didn’t hatch after 25 days, but 65% them hatched within 11 days upon moistening. These findings offer guidelines improvement protocols human consumption other uses.

Egg Diapause in Ephippiger Cruciger (orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) Iii. Abnormal Development through the Final Egg Diapause
Normally the egg of Ephippiger cruciger is subject to diapause when the embryo is almost fully developed. Most eggs die or develop erratically and slowly when chilled for some time at earlier non-diapausing stages. However, after 2 or 3 months' cooling at a stage just before catatrepsis a few eggs developed more rapidly than usual and hatched without intervention of a diapause, at a temperature...

A survey of Australian Phyllophorinae is presented. The entire fauna is represented by two species in two genera. Siliquofera grandis Blanchard, a species widely distributed in Papua New Guinea, is recorded from Iron Range, Queensland. Phyllophorella queenslandica Rentz, Su, Ueshima sp. nov. is described from Kuranda, Queensland and recorded from several localities on the Cape York peninsula. T...
متن کاملGrasshopper (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) Species Composition and Size Across Latitude in Atlantic Coast Salt Marshes
Although grasshoppers are common salt marsh herbivores, we know little about geographic variation in their species composition. We documented latitudinal variation in species composition of the tettigoniid grasshopper fauna of Atlantic Coast salt marshes. Tettigoniids (N=740 adults) were collected from the Spartina alterniflora zone of 31 salt marsh sites across a latitudinal range of 13.19° (F...
متن کاملOviposition Digging in the Grasshopper
1. Transection of the ventral nerve cord of female grasshoppers activates the rhythmical motor programme for oviposition digging. 2. Electrical stimulation of the cut nerve cord had the following effects on elicited oviposition motor activity: (i) shortand long-lasting inhibition of activity, (ii) phase resetting and (iii) modulation of burst frequency. 3. Cold saline applied to the nerve cord ...
